THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT
Doug Charleston left
early morning on August 12, 2008 for The Ride Against Obesity from Adel to Canada to raise
money for Hope2Offer Student Obesity Services. The ride totaled approximately 600
miles. This would be the longest ride of his life.
Day One
Day one started in the fog. It was a good day with great weather helping him ride 267 miles in 10
hours 38 minutes! He ate while on his bike
totaling 9 Gatorades, grapes, apples, and protein
bars. He had sun with a little rain to cool him and experienced a main
cable break. The cable break happened 30
miles from a Trek shop so he was able to get it fixed. Since his custom arm brace did not get finished before he left, leaning on his
right palm most of the ride would become a source of pain. When he finally stopped
for the night Doug finds a hotel and rests in the hot tub west of Minneapolis, MN - 9 pm
Wipe out, Bee Sting and Wind and sometimes a long and
lonely road. That is how most of the day
went. Despite it all Doug makes the 472
mile mark. You'll notice in the picture a vehicle mirror which was his Dad following
and helping with moral support, traffic control and biker safety. We continued
to see checks come in to support this venture ranging from $25-$300. One
particular gift came from a man who said he'd double his gift if Doug would make it
in three days. Go Doug!
Day Three: The Finish
The day starts with pain. Day three was
the biggest mental challenge he had faced as he discovered what it was like to
put physical pain out of his mind regardless of a numb right palm and posterior.
The thought of finishing what he started forced him dig deep and press on. He arrived at the
Canadian border in the evening on the 14th only to get "questioned"
what he was doing passing through on a bike. Do you have guns, drugs? (Come on
dude look at him, he can't hide that stuff in his water bottle). They believed
him! He made the long ride in three days!
At this time we have almost
$1,000 collected which will be specifically used to train Des Moines obese
children. Thank you to the Herald-Index and Adel News for covering the story. We are very appreciative to
those who gave and supported Hope2Offer and Doug.
